Book Promotion

October 30, 2006 · No Comments

For someone shy like me, the thought of promoting your own book is painful.  Or, maybe you’re new to the publishing world and thought that stuff was all taken care of by the publisher.  Not gonna happen!

Sorry, it’s just a fact of life.  New authors are going to have to market and hustle themselves and their book to create a solid reading base.

Words

“There’s a sucker born every minute.”

And it seems it is us.  The Yale Book of Quotations, edited by Fred R. Shapiro, tells us that many of our most beloved quotes are –well– fiction.

Which makes me think about the power of words. They take on a life of their own once written down.  Books can be comforting, inspiring, educational, stimulating, thought-provoking, exciting, funny…   They can take on a life of their own and make their way into the public reality.  What are the books that changed your life?

Retreat

October 24, 2006 · 4 Comments

Writers, like most of us, like to get away from the mundane life every once in a while.  For me, I take a short one each week at a local Starbuck’s.  Me and some other writer friends gather with our laptops or notebooks and spend a few hours banging it out with occasional breaks for a laugh, a gossip, and some coffee.

This weekend I’ll take a longer retreat.  My RWA chapter is sponsoring a weekend retreat in a beautiful wooded center.  I’ll tell you more about it when I return.

Writer’s are weird

October 11, 2006 · No Comments

I came across a note I wrote awhile back: While I was in the hospital with pneumonia, I was miserable as typical, but I couldn’t turn off my brain from observing and storing impressions and details in case I needed them for a book one day.  Heh!

Then today I came across this quote:
“A writer never has a vacation. For a writer life consists of either writing or thinking about writing.” –Eugene Ionesco

I’m not sure if the writing makes us look at the world as one big resource or if the thinking that way makes us writers.
