Bebe Moore Campbell died last week. It has hit the African American literary community hard. I am saddened by the loss of her talent and insight.
But in addition to that, I feel a cold wind on the back of my neck pushing me to do more, write more, write faster, live harder. Ms. Campbell was only 56 years old. How many more stories did she have in her?

“You must keep sending work out; you must never let a manuscript do nothing but eat its head off in a drawer. You send that work out again and again, while you’re working on another one. If you have talent, you will receive some measure of success — but only if you persist.” –Isaac Asimov
Recently I sent a manuscript I finished over 4 years ago. I thought it was pretty good. But I decided to concentrate on contemporary romance and let it go. But recently I dusted it off and sent it off.
I encourage you to go and look at those old manuscripts. They may need a little tweaking and updating. But you may be pleasantly surprised.

As a writer of romantic fiction, the focus is definitely on the heroine. We’ve come a long way since the time when the heroine shivered and whimpered and let the hero, 10 or 15 years older than her, terrorize her.
But we didn’t invite the kick-butt heroine. Here’s a piece about some of the strong heroines of our literature.

On Sunday, my chapter’s published authors along with our conference speakers’ Jennifer Cruisie and Bob Mayer signed books in the Greenbrier Mall. I love to do book signings that way. There were fourteen of us. I could enjoy the visitors without worrying too much about how many books had sold.
Some people have lots of give aways, like pins, pens, bookmarks, post cards, clips, magnets, clocks, mouse pads, etc. What things do you find most useful in the giveaway department. Name some others.
