Bridget Midway was my first intro to erotica and I still gauge other writers by the standard she set for me. Here’s the brief into:

Don’t let the 1940’s-sounding name fool you! Though she may sound sweet, Bridget Midway writes what everyone else fantasizes about. An avid writer for all things fun, unusual and passionate, she enjoys making her readers laugh as much as she likes seeing them fan themselves down after reading a hot, sexy scene. She writes long contemporary romance, single-title romance, some light paranormal romances, science fiction, historicals and erotica, all with multi-racial characters and/or with interracial romances (because when you have a box of chocolates, you have to taste each one and enjoy the differences). Some of her short stories have been accepted for publication by The Sun magazine. She was a finalist for the title of Sexiest Fiction Writer sponsored by BetterSex.com. What’s your current project? Recent releases and where to find them.

Currently I’m working on a project by erotica author Samara King for her Grown ‘N Sexy anthologies. My story is called “Last Call”. I’m not sure of its release date yet. I’ll have more on that soon. I also just finished edits on the soon to be released print version of Love My Way. It’s an interracial BDSM erotic romance about a Dominant trying to find his next submissive through a reality TV show. That’ll be coming out November 3rd through Phaze Books.

My most recent release is Woman In Chains through Loose Id. Here’s the blurb: Former Dom, Dak Ricci is a part of a BDSM group called S.A.F.E., which means Security Away From Extremists. The group concentrates on saving abused slaves and submissives from their dominants. After an emotional save, he decides that’s it for him. However, his friend and fellow Dom has another plan for him. He wants Dak to do one last rescue.

Brea Oliphant pushes her Dom to the limit to get the abuse she thinks she deserves. During a BDSM luncheon, another Domme sees what she perceives as abuse and contacts S.A.F.E. to help Brea.Dak decides to help Brea when he learns her Dom is the same man Dak’s last submissive left him for. He’s going to make this save about revenge.

As soon as Brea and Dak get together, the sexual tension between them is so palpable that they both rethink their BDSM roles. But when the truth about Dak’s involvement in her save and Brea’s past comes to light, will their connection be enough to keep them bound together?

It’s available in ebook format through Loose Id right now at http://www.loose-id.com/detail.aspx?ID=714

What’s your genre and how did you choose it or have it chosen for you?

The majority of the stories I write are interracial stories, so I guess that’s my genre. I’m also known for writing erotic BDSM stories. I hadn’t planned on writing BDSM erotica until I met a local BDSM group. Once I observed their dynamic, and I could feel the true love and passion it takes to be in a BDSM relationship, I couldn’t help but write a story. It started with Corporate Seduction, which had some light BDSM in it, to Woman In Chains, which deals with the harsh realities of BDSM relationships like abuse.  That one was a little heavy to write. So I’m looking forward to doing another light BDSM tale soon.

What was your first writing project?

The first actual manuscript I ever finished and a true writing project was my thesis for my Master of Arts degree from Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction program. My thesis had to be a full-length novel in the genre of my choice. I chose romance and wrote Kissing Casanova under my real name, Crystal B. Bright. It’s available in ebook and print through New Concepts Publishing.

What’s the worst piece of writing advice you ever got?

Actually, it was recently. An author blasted me for turning down a contract with a publisher that has a stipulation in their boilerplate contract that they get all of the rights to your story. She felt the money I would have made would have compensated for me giving up my “baby.” I disagreed. If I work hard on a story, especially a full-length novel, then I want a bit of control over what happens with that story. A lot of new authors want to get published so badly that they’ll practically sell their souls to do it. Everything takes time. I know it sucks to hear that, but it’s true.

What advice do you have for people just beginning in writing?

DON’T STOP WRITING! I just gave that advice today to a yet-to-be published author. She’s waiting to hear back from a publisher on a manuscript she sent them months ago. While she’s waiting, she should be writing her second or third manuscript, because when the publisher calls you or sends you that e-mail that says, “Yes, we want your work” their next question will be, “What else do you have?” Publishing is a business. Publishers, editors, agents and anyone associated with the business want to know that they’re going to invest their time and efforts into an author who has staying power. If all you want to do is publish that one great novel and that’s it, self-publish it. But if you have a whole catalogue of books in your head that you’re ready to write and get published, then keep writing and never give up.

Name the three qualities you think a good writer must possess. Which do you think you have?

A writer must be patient, creative and intuitive. As I mentioned above, publishing is a hurry-up-and-wait kind of business. It can drive you crazy with all of the waiting. But in the end, it will be worth it. When I say a writer must be creative, I don’t mean just with their stories. Once you’re published, you have to figure out creative ways for readers to both find you and buy your books. That’s where promotions come in. Writers are getting more and more creative with their promoting. As a published author, you have to be one step ahead of them to get noticed. And intuition can help you immensely. Always write the story of your heart, however, try to keep your ear out on the trends. I wrote interracial BDSM erotica when it wasn’t popular. Now readers can’t get enough of it. When you do book signings, listen to the reader in front of you. Get a sense of what they’re looking for in books.

So which of these qualities do I possess? It would be great to say all of them. However, out of all of them, I would say being creative is my best quality.

How many books a week do you read?

I’m lucky if I can read a book a MONTH! With everything I owe contractually and everything I do for myself and my publisher, I don’t have much time to do leisurely activities like reading. I am making more time, though, even if I have to read in the bathtub, which I love!

Tell us about your writing place. Which is your favorite? What would you change about it if you could? Do you always write in the same spot all the time, or do you roam from room to room, area to area as the mood strikes?

I just moved to a new house and all of my rooms are not furnished yet. So right now I’m in my spare bedroom that’s intended to be my office. I write on my laptop in bed. The good thing about writing in bed is that I can get comfortable. The bad thing is that sometimes I get too comfortable and fall asleep.

I’m very obsessive-compulsive, so I have to write in the same spot all of the time. I don’t like writing in a new environment because then I’ll get distracted by the new scenery.
